Guidelines
Temporary Housing Initiative guidelines for working with disadvantaged persons
In its work with some of the Cayman Islands' least fortunate residents, the Temporary Homes team has developed the following basic principles:
- See their humanity. They are people not stereotypes.
- Be patient with their shortcomings.
- Don't judge their behaviour. It is learned from the environment they live in. People use as examples what they know and see.
- Offer positive alternatives.
- Reflect those alternatives in your own lifestyle.
- Provide services that empower them, rather than enable or promote a welfare mentality.
- Maintain regular contact with them as repetition is the key to learning.
- Monitor the quality of service that is provided to ensure that their needs have not changed.
